On the tech tree icons are used for ships parts and buildings that a tech unlocks. Now that policies are introduced, unlocked policies might be added as well. Also, if possible, unlocked buildings, parts, and policies might be distinct by type within the box in some way (e.g., different colored borders, location in the box, ...)
